The real home truth is that the Government can and should do more to boost house building

The real home truth is that the Government can and should do more to boost house building

The National Housing Federation launched its 2012 Home Truths report today. It’s got lots of coverage, probably because it says again what many already know – there’s a housing crisis and it will put even more pressure on the already stressed and strained housing benefit system. We spend more than £20 billion a year on housing benefit in a bid to keep the poorest out of housing squalor. But thousands more working folk are turning to this benefit as rents…

Did the letter from the Communities Secretary to local authorities throw planning into a pickle?

Did the letter from the Communities Secretary to local authorities throw planning into a pickle?

There has been a lot of screaming about housing projects being abandoned after a letter was sent in late May from the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to local authorities saying regional targets were, in effect, dead. The National Housing Federation recently claimed that 85,000 planned homes have been scrapped as a result. So as I was doing research for the forthcoming Housing Market Intelligence report analysing planning data produced by Barbour ABI, it seemed wise to see what the data suggested….

Why local authorities would be mad to grant planning permissions right now

Why local authorities would be mad to grant planning permissions right now

So a spate of local planning authorities decided to halt housing schemes following the move by the Communities Secretary Eric Pickles to abolish regional spatial strategies.  No shock there then.  I’d argue, as I do later, that it would be totally rational for a planning authority to halt or delay planning even if there was widespread desire for the new development among a local council and all its constituents. Forecasters call the bottom of the house price slump

Forecasters call the bottom of the house price slump

The increasing stretch of stable house prices is leading forecasters to call the bottom of the slump. The Nationwide late last month tentatively said it may be time to think the unthinkable that house prices may exit 2009 higher than they entered it. Last week much was made of the RICS saying it expected house prices to be higher at the end of 2009 than at the beginning. Wisely, there were heavy caveats and warnings over the fragility of the…

A 25% jump in house prices – is that scientific or finger licking bad

A 25% jump in house prices – is that scientific or finger licking bad

I can tell you the price of a house in 2020. I’ll even let you into the secret of how I do it. What I do is lick my finger and stick it into the wind. Works every time, especially on those with no memory and little understanding, and I have the power to send them home comforted or worried, depending on which I choose. It’s a gift I have. And here’s a bonus, as a regular reader of this…

Housing rescue plan? What housing rescue plan?

Housing rescue plan? What housing rescue plan?

Caroline Flint has just announced the much talked of rescue plan for the housing market – couched in terms of affordable housing, but in essence an attempt to bolster the crumbling house building sector. It has been welcomed by the National Housing Federation, so it must be good. And I am sure the Home Builders Federation will, through gritted teeth, also welcome the move. See what you think, but to my eyes it appears to be the equivalent of throwing…
